The weather has been perfect around here lately, so I’ve stocked up on our favorite thing to grill (and it’s not hamburgers), it’s TUNA!

I didn’t eat a lot of seafood growing up and really didn’t think I liked it as a kid but the older I get and the healthier I eat the more I crave fish. A few years ago my family vacationed in Cape May, NJ and Brandon and I went out for a fancy dinner on our own at a nice seafood restaurant. It was that night that I had the most amazing thing I had ever tasted and it was a beautiful, perfectly cooked tuna steak. Ever since that night I have been hooked!  I don’t think I could ever replicate what the chef did that restaurant that night but this is pretty darn close.


I confess, I typically have Brandon cook this, but he does such a good job and he and Charlie get to bond on cooking something on the grill.


This tuna is marinated, ideally overnight, but for at least 30 minutes (most of the time it’s 30 minutes for us). It soaks up all the delicious flavors of the marinade and grilling it brings a smokiness to the table. My 2 year old loves this recipe. She says “it’s one of me favorites”, and if that isn’t a win I don’t know what is.

Grilled Tuna Steak


  • 4 4oz Tuna Steaks (I buy mine in the frozen seafood section of Whole Foods)
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup tamari
  • 2 Tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • salt and pepper to taste


Combine orange juice, tamari, sesame oil, lemon juice, italian seasoning and black pepper in a gallon bag or glass container. Place thawed tuna steaks in marinade and let sit for at least 30 minutes in the fridge.

Set your grill to a medium/high heat (about 350º). Brush your grill with olive oil. Then place your Tuna steaks on the grill for 4 minutes each side for Medium Temperature or cook 5 to 5 ½ minutes per side for Well Done. Let them sit for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
